Film Noir, often described and ‘dark film’ or ‘gangster film’, is an American style of filmmaking initially made in the 1940s and 50s which is generally characterised by disillusioned, doubtful villains and low-key lighting which accompany complex plot lines and the underlying philosophy that emphasises the idea of freedom and choice. This genre was most prevalent amongst American crime dramas and is known for its low budget filmmaking techniques which mainly involve striking visual effects that are made using lighting.

Some well-known examples of film noir include The Maltese FalconDouble Indemnity and Touch of Evil.
