Georges Seurat was a French post-impressionist painter who was very well known for his pointillism technique.

The dark and light tones have been very clearly distinguished as they vary from being quite dark to very light. An example of this is the figure’s back and the backdrop. This makes up for the lack of use of line when making shapes as Seurat relies greatly upon shading.

The paper that Seurat uses in his original artwork of this piece gives the impression that the material is almost fabric as you can clearly see that upon using a material on that paper, it gives it its own texture. If the paper had been hard card, the soft lead will not have been able to blend across different tones as easily as the rough nature of the paper would not allow the lead to slide and move around as silkily and smoothly.
