Here, we copied a piece of Alberto Giacometti’s artwork.

Giacometti mainly distinguishes planes from each other by using block shading to add lifelike dimensions to the face. To get clean edges on the shading,  I smudged outwards from a ruler. The lack of numerous planes may be trying to convey the idea that faces don’t hold definition through the abrupt nature of explicit lines but rather, find their own interpretation with the subtle but evident curves.

With this portrait, Giacometti has described the planes of a face to strongly represent bone structure and distinctive facial features. For instance, the jaw has been very boldly outlined and is defined from the rest of the face by angular shading – another plane.
